The Not-So-Sweet Ingredient that can Harm Your Dog!

For most of us, we don’t even think about this ingredient being in literally hundreds of products (700+ at last count!). For humans, this ingredient is non-toxic and even helpful in our day-to-day dental care, weight control and even fewer ear and yeast infections. In fact, this substance is a natural product found in fruits and vegetables and even in our bodies via normal metabolism.

But for our canine friends, this seemingly innocuous ingredient is a sugar alcohol sweetener that can harm, or even kill an unsuspecting dog. This sugar-free sweetener is highly toxic to dogs and may lead to life-threatening hypoglycemia, liver failure and worse.

Did you know that xylitol is deadlier than chocolate?

What you need to know about xylitol

According to Healthline.com, xylitol looks and tastes like sugar but with 40% fewer calories while also not raising blood sugar levels which is beneficial in the presence of diabetes or insulin resistance.

The Number 1 Halloween Danger!

Again, xylitol plays a huge role in Halloween since it’s often found in candy, chocolate, chewing gum, breath mints, fruit drinks, baked goods, sugar-free products and more! It will probably be hiding in your candy bowl for potential trick-or-treaters too! Make sure your dog does not have access to the candy bowl or your kids’ trick-or- treating bags filled with sweets! It can take just 20 minutes for your dog to be poisoned from xylitol!

Where Else Does Xylitol Hide?

As said earlier, there are hundreds of products, both edible and non-edible, containing xylitol.

  • protein bars and powders

  • Jams and jellies
