Protect Your Dog from these Fall Dangers
The cooler temperatures of Fall encourage both dog owners and their K9s to spend more time outside especially in desert areas like Las Vegas! But fall also means different dangers for your pup. Keep reading to know how to protect your dog from Fall dangers!
Seasonal Plants that are Toxic
There are several popular fall flowers and plants your dog should not be able to access for their safety.
Autumn Crocus
The Autumn Crocus is a perennial plant that is also known as the Meadow Saffron.
The Spring Crocus is not related and blooms in the spring and is non-toxic.
The Autumn Crocus is extremely toxic to dogs (and cats) and may even cause death.
Chrysanthemums
Also known as mums or daisies, this popular fall flower is mild to moderately toxic to pets depending on how much your dog or cat consumes.
Apple Trees
Both apples and crabapples contain cyanide in all parts of the plant except the fruit flesh. When apples are left on the ground to spoil (through fermentation), they can pose alcohol toxicity for pets when consumed. Also, if pets chew and ingest apple seeds, cyanide toxicity is possible, although rare. But if you have a dog who eats everything in sight, keep them away from the rotting apples on the ground.
Seasonal Allergies
According to PetMD.com, seasonal allergies can occur in pets just like they can in people and dust, grass, ragweed and mold are common culprits. Just like their humans, dogs can react to the change in season with:
Sneezing and coughing.
Excessive licking, biting and chewing, especially the paws.
Watery eyes.
Hives and rashes.
Work with your veterinarian to find an effective solution to provide your dog (or other pet) with relief from their allergies. Always look for natural alternatives whenever possible to avoid additional negative or toxic side effects. Learn How to Help with Fall Dog Allergies at iHeartDogs.com.
Cooler Temperatures Aggravates Arthritis
Cooler temperatures can intensify arthritis in both older pets (and humans); this is known as “seasonal arthritis.” Symptoms of discomfort from inflamed, arthritic joints include:
Stiffness.
Pain.
Limping; and
Your dog, cat or even rabbit’s reluctance to move and exercise.
Work with your veterinarian to relieve your pet’s allergies.
