Want a Happy Dog this Holiday? Use These 5 Easy Tips!

Being the social creatures they are, our dogs love to be included in family events and celebrations! But it’s also important to recognize those dogs who are shy and prefer peace and quiet. Always know your dog and never force them to be the life of the party! Keep reading to learn 5 easy tips for a happy dog this holiday season!

The holiday season can be fun and happy but also stressful and chaotic. So how can you keep your dog happy – and calm – during the holiday festivities? Below, we offer five simple tips!

#1: Regular, Consistent Exercise and Training

Our dogs rely upon their usual schedule, routine and exercise to maintain a happy and healthy life! During the holidays it can be difficult to stick to their normal schedules with everything that needs to be done. But it’s critical for your dog’s overall well-being.

If holiday activities are going to interfere with your dog’s routine, hire a trusted dog sitter and/or dog walker. Sending your pup to doggy daycare can also help tire them out during the day and keep them away from a busy household.

Also, do not forget your training regimen during the holidays! Regular training helps tire out canines while also reinforcing what they’ve learned with critical mental stimulation. Even just a quick training session here and there in your day can help build and nurture the foundation of training and bonding!

Remember, a tired dog is a happier dog!

#2: Calming Music

Just like music can affect our own moods, certain types of music can calm an anxious dog. According to PreventiveVet.com, music genres including reggae, soft rock and even classical music can help dogs calm down and relax. Experts recommend mixing up the stations you play for your dog. Not sure what kind of music your dog likes? You can find pet-centric playlists on Spotify and DOGTV as well as the popular Canine Lullabies and Through a Dog’s Ear.

#3: DOGTV

DOGTV is a unique streaming service for the dogs of our lives! Content is available on your favorite streaming devices. Programs are scientifically-designed to alleviate K9 stress and anxiety with calming visuals and soothing sounds. Music is also available along with hundreds of programs for pet parents too! While DOGTV is a wonderful way to entertain your dog, it does not replace the benefits of regular exercise or training. Try a 7-day free trial.

#4: Enrichment Toys

These toys offer mental stimulation with an interactive experience. By keeping him engaged and challenged, your K9 can entertain himself while you are entertaining holiday guests. Just make sure the enrichment toy(s) you choose are appropriate for your dog’s breed, age, ability and common behaviors. (For example, if your dog loves to chew and destroy, avoid any small pieces he could accidentally swallow.)

#5: Time Outs and Quiet Spaces

If you don’t already have a dedicated quiet space for your dog, create one before the hustle and bustle of the holidays! You can use a quiet bedroom or office, a crate or even baby gates to keep your pooch confined to a quiet, out-of-the-way place so they can relax. Include their favorite blanket, toys and water. This should never be used as a punishment, but as a welcoming place where your dog can rest.
